NYC subway in 2017: Second Avenue service begins
The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway opened on January 1, 2017, with new stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets. South Ferry’s newer terminal also reopened in June 2017 after the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

What this map represents
This year-end reconstruction contains 474 modeled stops across 4 boroughs and about 229 mapped miles. These are counts from this project’s model, not official historical station or track-mile totals. Modern route colors identify corridors, not the services running in 2017.
Selected events, 2010–2017
2012: Sandy floods South Ferry
Storm flooding shut the newer terminal. The old loop returned to passenger use in 2013 while repairs continued.
2015: The 7 reaches Hudson Yards
34th Street–Hudson Yards opened on September 13, extending the Flushing Line west from Times Square.
2017: Second Avenue welcomes passengers
On January 1, new stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets opened for Q service.
