What this website does
NYC Subway Timeline is an independent interactive history explorer. Move through 19 selected snapshots from 1904 to 2026 to see how New York’s subway infrastructure grew and changed. Search for a station, compare eras, discover a station with “Surprise me,” or follow the Original 28 opening-day tour.

How to read the map
Each view represents the end of its selected year. Gold highlights show additions since the previous snapshot. The accompanying history covers the period between snapshots, rather than only the selected calendar year. Selected events have source links.
Modern route colors, letters and numbers identify corridors; they do not describe historical service or operators. “In modeled network from” can mean a station opening, electrification, or a connection opening. A separately sourced original opening is labeled “First opened.” A snapshot difference alone does not establish an exact opening or closure date.
What is reconstructed
The map combines surviving modern alignments with selected restored closed stations, including City Hall, Worth Street and the Polo Grounds Shuttle. Counts describe modeled stops and mapped miles, not an official historical station total or track-mile inventory. The 1904 year-end view includes other infrastructure and is not the 28-station opening-day route.
The Lost lines toggle adds selected demolished elevated routes, including Manhattan’s avenue els and Brooklyn elevated lines. Geometry is approximate, with straight lines between stations where historical track has not been digitised. Coverage is incomplete; shared stations use one marker.

- NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission documents original station architecture.
- Wikimedia Commons provides station illustrations. Photo dates, creators, licenses and source descriptions are linked from the map. A photo is not necessarily from the selected year.
Use it for history, not journey planning
This is an approximate infrastructure reconstruction, not a complete historical service map or a live journey planner. The 2026 snapshot is a modeled view, not a live service feed. For current routes, disruptions and accessible travel, consult the MTA. This project is not an official MTA service.
